H.P. Lovecraft didn’t start a story as well as Shirley Jackson. But the first line of “Call of Cthulhu” is quite good. It’s also Lovecraft’s single entry in Bartlett’s Familiar Quotations (15th ed.):

The most merciful thing in the world, I think, is the inability of the human mind to correlate all its contents.
