This is the best time of year to read a scary story. Or to read about scary stories. Over the years, I’ve profiled Dean Koontz and written appreciations of H.P. Lovecraft, M.R. James, Arthur Machen, Edgar Allan Poe, and Bram Stoker’s Dracula. I’ve written about the ghostly tales of Russell Kirk. I’ve written on exorcisms and The Exorcist. And if all goes according to plan, I’ll have something new available later this week.

I just reread your piece on the ghostly tales of Russell Kirk. His short stories in this vein are classics. Of his novels, I would give “Lord of the Hollow Dark” first place myself.
