Asa conservative Republican who is a political science at a community college, I can only say that the phenomena you speak of are present at all levels of higher education. It is next to impossible for me to find conservative or Christian colleagues. I am not a bigot; I respect the intelligence and sincerity of most of my fellow teachers. However, I have found that not only are they politically and culturally liberal, but they assume I must be as well. If they were ever to find out that I voted for Reagan twice, or that I believe Alger Hiss was guilty, or that Michael Moore and Howard Zinn are charlatans, or that I read (gasp) National Review or that my favorite twentieth century political philosophers are STRAUSS, VOEGELIN and OAKESHOTT, they would send for someone to deprogram me.
Perhaps even worse, my community college is so obsessed with 'multi-culturalism"( they call it , so help me God- oh, sorry, "dead patriarchal entity- the "diversity requirement" ) that any courses I propose must have a 'comparative' or non-western component. Amazingly, one of the ways to qualify for the "diversity certificate" is to take a course in Origami, thereby demonstrating an appreciation for the rich culture of Japan. And here I thought it would require a careful study of Japanese religion or politics, or perhaps of the films of Kurosawa, Mizoguchi and Ozu.
