Before Cato was an institute, it was a play by Joseph Addison. It may have been George Washington’s favorite piece of literature. Five years ago, to commemorate Presidents’ Day, I wrote about it for NRO.

The picture below hangs in the National Portrait Gallery in London. The artist is Thomas Lawrence. The subject is John Philip Kemble, an actor who portrayed Cato in an 1811 revival of the play.
