There’s no photo of me on the back cover of The First Assassin, not even a tiny mug shot in the corner. I thought it would look too busy. Then there’s the other problem–the one highlighted in today’s “Pepper … and Salt” cartoon in the Wall Street Journal.

    You should read Fritz Leiber’s “The Silver Eggheads”; a science fiction parody of the publishing industry. In it books are churned out by machines called “word mills”. “Authors” are union members holding down featherbed jobs protected by government regulation. Their main purpose is to pose for the 3-D backcover photos and the fantasy bios that go with them.
