The Last Excerpt

A few weeks ago, I posted a series of chronological excerpts from The First Assassin. Most of the chapters took place in April 1861. Excerpts appeared on their anniversaries 149 years later. The last chapter is dated April 26, 1861, for example, so I posted an excerpt on April 26, 2010.

The last chapter doesn’t end the story. There’s also a short epilogue, which occurs on June 1, 1861. Its anniversary is today. Any excerpt would include spoilers, so I’ll leave you with the book’s final four words, which are spoken by one of the characters: “The war is young.”

Two days later–in real history–soldiers skirmished at Philippi, in what is now West Virginia. Below is an image of the engagement, from Harper’s Weekly.
