Today is the 149th anniversary of First Bull Run, the first major battle of the Civil War. By the standards of what was to come, it wasn’t a huge engagement. But it had a profound effect on the psychology of both sides.
The historic park that commemorates the battle is one of my favorite stops on the Civil War tourism circuit. Most of the fighting took place on a fairly small patch of land–a short walk, with or without a park ranger, lets you take it in and understand what happened there.
Today also provides as good an excuse as any to link to one of the better Civil War blogs, Bull Runnings.
