My article on Fritz Leiber is in the Wall Street Journal. The idea for it came from the comment section of a post on “Best Ghost Stories.” A few readers mentioned Leiber. This inspired me to read Conjure Wife, which I’d been meaning to do for a while, and then to read a little more deeply. I hope you like the result–and maybe decide to check out Leiber for yourself.
My research led to a nifty discovery. I had known that H.P. Lovecraft was an important influence on Leiber. I also had known that they corresponded. What I didn’t know is that their correspondence kicked off with Lovecraft saying how much he had enjoyed seeing Leiber’s father on stage as a Shakespearean actor–he had seen Fritz Leiber Sr. in several roles and was effusive about a certain set of lines he had deliverd in King John.
Perhaps Fritzphiles already knew this, but it was news to me. So I shared it in the Journal article.
