Fort Stevens doesn’t figure in The First Assassin, but it’s one of the must-see stops on the Lincoln tourism circuit in Washington, D.C.

On July 11, 1864, Confederate Gen. Jubal Early tried to raid the federal capital–from the north, of all directions. That afternoon, President Lincoln showed up to witness the attack. Several legends surround his appearance at Fort Stevens, but the gist of the story is that he stood on the earthworks to observe the Confederate assault, came under enemy fire, and sought cover only after a Union officer shouted an order: “Get down, you damn fool!” The young man who allegedly spoke those words was future Supreme Court Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr.
