“When a dog bites a man that is not news, but when a man bites a dog that is news,” said the 19th-century journalist Charles A. Dana. (He also gave us another famous line: “Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus.”)
Dana is credited with hiring Karl Marx as a foreign correspondent for the New York Tribune–and so the London-based Marx eventually produced a number of articles about the Civil War. Here’s a compilation. Here’s an overview. This was before Marx became world famous for Marxism. In fact, his war correspondence seems to have petered out as he concentrated on writing Das Kapital.
This week’s podcast with Kevin Williamson doesn’t involve the Civil War, but it does examine what Marx wrought. Marx is the cover boy for Kevin’s new book, The Politically Incorrect Guide to Socialism.
Next week’s podcast: Daniel Mahoney on conservatives and liberals.
