Here’s an article I wrote on the Founding Fathers’ favorite piece of literature: Cato, a play by Joseph Addison.

The Founding Fathers were good at putting their ideas into words, perhaps nowhere better than in the document Americans celebrate on the Fourth of July. Thomas Jefferson seems not to have had “Cato” on his desk when he drafted the Declaration of Independence, but his library at Monticello did contain a copy of Addison’s collected writings—and among his peers, no single work of literature may have been more important than “Cato.”
